WD Green 1TB EAVS, EACS, EADS confusion

There appears to be 3 drives on the market for 1TB green:

WD10EADS – 32MB
WD10EACS – 16MB
WD10EAVS – 8MB

The EAVS (V for Value) are also used in the WD Elements series of external hard drives.
The WD10EADS, newer WD10EACS (WD10EACS-00D6B0) and WD1001FALS (Black) all have 3 platters. The FALS seems much more responsive.

In the wider sense of “WD 1TB Green”, there’s also the old WD10EVCS and the new WD10EVVS drives, both part of the AV-GP series, plus the RE2-GP WD1000FYPS. Goldpelican recently summed it up pretty well (only he’s missing the now more widely available WD10EAVS).

Scribus version and compatibility confusion

As a first time Scribus user two things troubled me. For starters I couldn't grasp the order in which versions were made available. And for second I was confused regarding backward compatability. Different sources like readme, online manual en faq mention something about backward compatibility. But in such a way I had trouble comprehending it. On top of it searching for a definition of "backward compatibility" different sources all define it differently. I even get the impression a wikipedia article about it contradicts itself. So I'll try to make two things a bit clearer for at least my self :)

1. What's with the scribus versioning scheme / scribus versioning convention?
2. Will a later version of Scribus be able to load a data file created by an earlier version?

Ubuntu and VNC-SC

I recently switched from XP to Ubuntu. For almost everything I use, an Ubuntu replacement is available. At the moment only two applications require XP and those are Sony Vegas and Nuance Paperport. Fortunately I use those applications only occasionally.

Today I tried getting UltraVNC SingleClick working.

After some searching on the web I found the solution in using:

xtightvncviewer -listen -encodings "hextile copyrect"

I needed the Synaptic Package Manager to install it.

Clarkconnect as base for my passive cooled NAS, PABX, X-10, VPN Gateway mini system

I have a test setup running based on CC 4.3 Community edition. It also runs MySQL, Apache Webserver, Apache Tomcat, OpenVPN roadwarrior gateway and SABnzbd+. I have two webapps running. One is Menalto Gallery 2 and the other is a servlet/jsp application. Both require a database.

My test hardware is an old Celeron (mendocino) at 433Mhz and 512MB sdram on a Abit LX6 motherboard. In my test setup I've added a SATA controller so large harddisks (300GB+) may be used. It's connected to the internet using a external SMC WiFi box connected to a RJ-45.

Linux DMS (Scan, OCR, JPEG2000 MRC/JPM, PDF, Record and store)

Because I want to leave my dualboot paperport solution and I cannot find a free Linux alternative (Archivista) with an active community I'm thinking of building it myself. It's just an idea at the moment. I don't know when I have the time to really look into it.

It has to run on Linux and preferably using Java to glue everything together so it should be easier to create a multi-platform solution which would have a better user acceptance and thus allow for a larger community.

Archivista OpenSource DMS and ERP

I'm looking at Archivista 2009/I (20090202) as a possible Linux and free alternative for Nuance PaperPort 11.

I currently use PaperPort to digitize all my personal post, so I only have to keep the really important paper documents but also have a digital copy of the other documents available. I've switched to Linux (Ubuntu) and want to leave my current dual boot setup. Unfortunately Paperport does not run using Wine. Fortunately I found Archivista. It seems there is no software for Linux like it.

Pro's above PaperPort:
+ Free

Digital documents: PDF, PDF/A, PDF/X, PDF-MRC, JPEG2000, DjVu

I have used PaperPort to create PDF-MRC files, which are highly compressed PDF Image files. Because I've switched from XP to Ubuntu (linux), I'm looking for an alternative. It seems PDF-MRC is a Nuance/Scansoft thing and not much else is found using Google.

A possible alternative could be Archivista. It's GPL'ed and a bootable ISO is available. I wonder if it's possible to install this beside (multi-boot) a normal Ubuntu setup.

Syslog SPA 3000 to ClarkConnect

I have a Sipura / Linksys SPA-3000 and a ClarkConnect SBS. I wish to have the SPA3000 use CC as a syslog server.
